Competition Rules

Submission for the juried competition and show must meet the following criteria:

 

1.        Entries may be from an original idea; worked under the direction of a teacher; or from a commercial pattern or kit.

 

2.        ”a” classes in each category must be an original design created and developed by the entrant.

 

3.        An ‘Artist’s Statement’ must accompany the entry and include the source of the design, inspiration, purpose of the piece, and relation to the theme if any.  Credit should be given to the author, teacher, and artists etc. who inspired the work and to anyone participating in the execution of the work.  Title of piece, year completed, size, materials and techniques used, and credits to be listed but not counted in word total (see sample on web site).

 

4.        The piece must have been completed within the last two years.

 

5.        Minimum size excluding the mat and frame is 9 square inches; maximum size is 65”x 65” unless otherwise noted.

 

6.        Entrants agree to allow their images to be used for promotional purposes, and to allow photographs to be taken while on display.

 

7.        Every precaution will be taken to protect all articles, but it must be understood that in no case shall the Focus on Fibre Art Association be held responsible for any loss or damage of any kind to any article while it is in the competition and show.  Insurance on all items is your responsibility.

 

8.        The FFAA reserves the right to combine classes.

 

9.        Judge’s decisions are final. 
 

10.     An entry may be entered in only one class.

 

11.     Digital images are preferred but 8” x 10” prints will be accepted.  Slides are no longer accepted.  For the first round of adjudication submit one (1) set of prints or one (1) CD for each entry.  Each set to consist of two (2) images.

1.        full view including the frame (if framed);

2.        one close up of the fine detail.

Total of two (2) images per entry.

N.B. Wearable classes and three dimensional entries to consist of three (3) images.

1.        full view of the front;

2.        full view of the back;

3.        one close up of the fine detail.

Total of three (3) images per entry.

                Entries with incorrect number of images will be disqualified.

 

12.     The entry fee is $30 per item for members (see paragraph 4 ‘About the Competition’ in brochure) and $40 per item for non members.  A maximum of three entries per person.  Entry fee and return postage if entry will be mailed must accompany each entry at the time of submission.  Return postage will be refunded if entry does not pass selection committee.  Entries without return postage will not be accepted.

 

13.     Entry form and images postmarked by Feb 3 for Early Bird or Feb 17, 2012 for regular entry; are to be sent to Show Secretary, Focus on Fibre Art Association, 11042-160A St, Edmonton AB T5P 3G7.  Late entries will not be accepted.  Enclose a self addressed, stamped, padded envelope  for return of judge’s critique and your CD.  Digital Images only will be returned. 

 

14.     No actual article is to be submitted prior to the request from the Selection Committee.  You will be advised by e-mail or phone which pieces are accepted for the final adjudication.  All mailed  pieces must be postmarked  by, Mar. 30 2012 and sent to FFAA Show Secretary, 11042 – 160A St. Edmonton, AB T5P 3G7.  All delivered entries are to be brought to the venue at a date and time TBA.

 

15.     If piece is accepted by the Selection Committee, the artist must prepare it for display including sleeves, rods, and hangers.  All display aids must be labelled with artist’s name. 

 

16.     Strong reusable packing material must be used to send entries by mail.  All packing material must be labelled with the artist’s name.

 

17.     Entry form may be faxed or emailed to Show Secretary, 780 489-2380, armandej@telus.net ;  but image, entry fee and return postage must be mailed by deadline (see rule 13) to be eligible.

 

18.     All entrants will be able to pick up their entries in the Fall of 2012 at a place and date to be announced.  If picked up by someone other than the entrant, a letter of authorization must be presented.

 

19.     All mailed entries will be returned in original packing material included with the submission.  Each entry must have sufficient return postage included with the submission.  Please check with Canada Post at www.canadapost.ca for rates.

 

20.     Mailed entries to be sent preferably, by Xpress Post.

 

21.     Ribbons will be awarded to first, second, and third place winners.  Cash or gift certificates will be awarded to ‘best of category’ in each category, see ‘Categories’.

 

22.     Group Project.  A group of two or more artists may enter ANY original class.  Entry must be clearly labelled ‘Group Entry’ and all artists identified.

 

23.     Artists are required to pick up their pieces within 45 days from notification that they may be picked up.  If pieces are left after 45 days, the pieces will be considered abandoned and will become the property of the FFAA.  Once the pieces become the property of the FFAA, it may keep or dispose of the pieces at its discretion without any liability to the artist.
